How freelancers can collect testimonials

A practical testimonial collection playbook for freelancers: when to ask, five questions, display ideas and a request message.

The right moment

Once the client has used the delivered work, after the invoice conversation is settled.

Five questions worth asking

  1. What did you hire me to do?
  2. What made collaboration easier?
  3. How did the handover go?
  4. Which part of the result do you value?
  5. What would you tell another client considering this service?

Use one question as your wall prompt rather than making every question a mandatory field.

Where to show the answer

Portfolio project pages beside the relevant work.

A request you can adapt

Hi {name}, thank you for the work I delivered. Would you share a few honest words about your experience? What did you hire me to do? If you are comfortable with us publishing it, here is our short form: {collection_link}. No pressure, and thank you either way.

Permission and fair presentation

Do not imply an ongoing client relationship from a one-off engagement. Ask before publishing a client name.

Follow the FTC Endorsement Guides and EU Unfair Commercial Practices rules where applicable: no fake reviews, and disclose incentives or material connections. Do not condition rewards on positive feedback. Request explicit permission, keep the original meaning and make removal straightforward.

Questions, answered

Should every customer answer all five questions?
No. Choose one relevant prompt and let the contributor decide what to share. Avoid leading questions that demand praise.
Can freelancers use the free plan?
Yes. Start with one wall and 15 approved testimonials on display. All received submissions remain visible in the private dashboard.

Your next testimonial starts with a link.
